F1 teams still up for sale

John Williams - Tuesday 17.02.09, 16:17pm

With many of the agreed cost cutting regulations now in place within F1, it is interesting to note that despite efforts to standardise engines, gearboxes and running gear on future Formula one cars, it is still not allowable for two or more teams to use the same designed chassis.

Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz says that his Toro Rosso F1 team is still up for sale and he says it will remain that way, “Because there is no change in the rule that says we are not allowed to build one chassis for two teams.”

Bearing in mind the savings that could be made, even if it were only for the use of the two Red Bull in-house teams, I am surprised that the powers that be have not recognised this as an area in which some of the independent teams could benefit.

While Mateschitz maybe offering the Toro Rosso team for sale as a matter of principle, the Honda Racing team are looking for a life saver if they are to continue racing in 2009. A management buyout may seem the most likely way forward, but what happened to the ‘dozen’ or so interested parties, that were interested in the team.

Nick Fry had previously denied that a management buyout was an option and if it were, the CEO should not have been involved in dealing with prospective buyers.

Motorsport news this week says that  an eleventh hour bid from an anonymous but financially sound world branded business has been received by Honda in Japan, this has been described by Honda Racing F1 team as an hostile bid.

Whatever the outcome things need to move on rapidly if Honda are to race this season.
