In the very first practice session at the brand new Valencia street circuit in Spain, Sebastian Vettel in the Toro Rosso Ferrari topped the time-sheets.
Many of the drivers struggled to find grip on the green surface this morning, even Lewis Hamilton, who was seen spinning out on his final timed lap in the Mercedes McLaren.
Felipe Massa was the second fastest man on the track for Ferrari, with Hamilton in third and the second Toro Rosso driver, Sebastien Bourdais in fourth place.
The second McLaren, driven by Heikki Kovalainen, was at the top of the time-sheets for most of the morning but finally finished in fifth place ahead of Robert Kubica in the BMW Sauber in sixth.
Kubica’s team-mate, Nick Heidfeld struggled with pace this morning and finished the session 1.2 seconds behind Kubica and in sixteenth place.
Kimi Raikkonen was in seventh place in the second Ferrari followed by Kazuki Nakajima for Williams in eighth, Fernando Alonso in the Renault in ninth, and Nico Rosberg in the second Williams rounding up the top ten fastest drivers of the session.
As the session progressed, so did the times of Rubens Barrichello in the Honda, who finished in eleventh place, while his team-mate, Jenson Button was back in seventeenth position.
Jarno Trulli in the Toyota came in twelfth despite several off track moments, with his team-mate, TimoGlock in fourteenth place.
The Force India driver, Adrian Sutil was an impressive thirteenth place after a late challenge while team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella finished in eighteenth place.
Nelson Piquet in the second Renault was in fifteenth place while the two Red Bull drivers, David Coulthard and Mark Webber were the slowest drivers today, finishing in nineteenth and twentieth places respectively, with Coulthard hitting a tyre wall just after the chequered flag was waved.
