Heikki Kovalainen in the McLaren, took the victory today at the Hungarian Grand Prix after Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton were taken out of contention.
Massa put the Ferrari in front after squeezing out Hamilton at the first corner and securing the lead ahead of the McLaren driver and Kovalainen in third.
At the end of the first lap, Timo Glock in the Toyota was in fourth followed by Robert Kubica in the BMW Sauber and Fernando Alonso in the Renault in sixth.
Sebastien Vettel in the Toro Rosso, was the first man to retire from the race after his engine got too hot and burned some parts, while his team-mate, Sebastian Bourdais’s car caught fire in the pits while re-fuelling.
The next two car’s into the pits suffered the same problems, Kazuki Nakajima in the Williams, but he continued out of the pit lane and let the wind put the flames out, as did the Honda driver, Rubens Barrichello.
Lewis Hamilon was seen going wide after developing a puncture, he struggled to keep the car on track and get back to the pits. He refuelled to the end of the race, but returned in eleventh place.
Massa was now twenty-three seconds ahead of Kovalainen as Kimi Raikkonen moved up into fourth position and then set the fastest lap of the race.
With only five laps remaining, Raikkonen was closing-in on Glock as the Force India car of Adrian Sutil suffered a puncture which put him out of the race. Unbelievably, Massa’s Ferrari expired with only three laps remaining.
Kovalainen took his first Grand Prix victory followed by Timo Glock on his first career podium in second place for the Toyota team.
Raikkonen was in third ahead of Alonso and Hamilton. Nelson Piquet finished in an impressive sixth place followed by Jarno Trulli, Robert Kubica, Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld.
