Fernando Alonso is leaving open the debate on whether he will leave the Renault team for Ferrari at the end of the 2008 season.
The Spanish driver managed to get out of a three year contract with McLaren after just one year to return to his previous winning Renault team.
His new Renault contract which was supposedly for two years has a clause that will also allow him to escape at the end of this season to join Ferrari, if rumours prove to be right.
He was quoted as saying by the German news agency SID “I have signed a two year contract with Renault, but in Formula One we know that contracts are flexible.”
The escape clause is supposedly linked with the on-track performance of Renault, and it’s claimed that the team have already admitted to having so far failed to provide the driver with a winning car. Alonso said ” I knew that it would be a difficult year for Renault. However, I had hoped that we might be looking to get on the podium once or twice.”
