Lewis Hamilton Closing In On F1 Drivers Crown

John Williams - Thursday 09.10.08, 17:09pm

Britains McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton goes into the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend with a seven point advantage over Ferrari rival, Brazilian Felipe Massa, with just three races remaining in this seasons calendar.

Although mathematically it is possible for third place driver Robert Kubica or fourth placed Kimi Raikkonen to still win the drivers championship, it would mean both Hamilton and Massa picking up no points from the remaining races. While anything is possible in F1, realistically the title is in the hands of these two young rivals, Hamilton and Massa.

Lewis Hamilton must start as favourite if only because of the small points advantage, despite landing himself in hot water with the F1 regulators on a couple of occasions this season the 23 year old has shown that his rookie year in F1 was no fluke.

His driving has been superb and but for some controversial decisions he may well have wrapped up the championship already. He looks hungry to win, with controlled aggression particularly from the start line and a smooth driving style that is currently unrivalled in F1.

The latest Formula 1 news from Japan has Felipe Massa saying that Hamilton is in for a hard time, insisting that he will battle all the way to the final race to secure his first World Championship title. But inside Formula 1 many consider that Massa has not really been convincing enough so far in his career and although he is considered a quick driver he lacks the consistency that Hamilton has shown in his own short time in the top flight.

In fairness Massa has had his fair share of controversy too, his own misfortune in the pits at Singapore two weeks ago cost him dearly and Ferrari reliability has affected his own F1 results on several occasions.

Hamilton has the edge for me and would be a worthy winner at his second attempt, but I hope that it will be another season that goes to the wire, as there is so little to choose between these young guns.

One point seperates Ferrari from McLaren in the constructors championship so we may also see some ‘Dick Dastardly’ team tactics come into play with the second drivers as so much remains at stake.
