Reports in the Italian press saying that Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has agreed in principal to buying the F1 Honda team, have been dismissed out of hand in a statement issued by his Telmex racing team.
The statement reads; “The Telmex Team can confirm that Carlos Slim Helu has not bought the Honda F1 team nor is holding any negotiations to do so. Therefore all information related to this subject has no basis and is completely false.”
The Italian media had suggested that Slim had agreed to purchase the Honda team and had reached an agreement to retain Jenson Button alongside Bruno Senna as next seasons drivers, leaving Rubens Barichello without a seat for 2009.
Senna is sponsored by Embratel part of Slim’s Telmex group and it appears that the Italian press have used this information to conjure up the story. Honda team principal Ross Brawn agreed that the story was false but admitted that “We would love it if it were true but it’s pure speculation from various members of the media, It’s just been one of those rumours which has developed a life of its own.”
Brawn is optimistic that a buyer will be found for the Honda team before the end of January, insisting that there has been a lot of interest and reiterating that the team still have a competetive package to offer.
