Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying

Joy Ryder - Saturday 24.05.08, 21:00pm

monacoThe qualifying session got underway today, for the 66th Monaco Grand Prix with a rapidly drying track after a damp morning practice session.

The Brazilian driver, Felipe Massa took the twelfth pole position of his career today on the streets of Monte Carlo, less than a tenth of a second in front of his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Lewis Hamilton took third place to start on the second row of the grid for Mercedes alongside his team-make Heikki Kovalainen in fourth.

The BMW Sauber driver, Robert Kubica did a great job today and will be starting in fifth place, his team-mate, Nick Heidfeld is way back in thirteenth place.

Nico Rosberg, was true to his word and took the sixth grid spot for the Williams team, only four-tenths of a second behind Kubica.

Fernando Alonso is in seventh for Renault with Nelson Piquet only managing seventeenth.  Jarno Trulli is in eighth for Toyota ahead of the two Red Bull drivers, Mark Webber and David Coulthard.

David Coulthard had a huge crash into the wall today, after making the final top ten shoot out.  He was unhurt but the car was very badly damaged.  He was exiting the tunnel and in the braking area when the car just broke away and smashed into the barrier, sending two wheels onto the track and the rest of the car down the escape road at high speed.

The second Toyata driver Timo Glock, will start in eleventh place followed by Jenson Button in the Honda.  His team-mate Rubens Barrichello, is starting from fifteenth position behind Heidfeld and the second Williams driver, Kazuki Nakajima.

Sebastien Bourdais is in the new Toro Rosso Ferrari package this weekend and starts in sixteenth place ahead of  Piquet and Sebastian Vettel.

The two Force India drivers, Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella take the last two slots on the grid.  However, Vettel has now been penalised for having the new unit and car at the track under the gearbox rules, and will lose five places on the grid.  As his team-mate did not race in the last Grand Prix, he escaped the penalty.
