Heikki Kovalainen took his first pole position for the McLaren team today, ahead of tomorrow’s British Grand Prix.

In the final few seconds of the 60-minute qualifying session, Kovalianen took the top spot from Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber, who secured the teams best ever qualifying place.

Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari, was in third place ahead of the second Mclaren driver Lewis Hamilton, who went off track on his first lap of the final session and never seemed to regain momentum.

For the first time this season, Nick Heidfeld managed to beat his BMW Sauber team-mate Robert Kubica to take fifth place, while Kubica is down in tenth after ending his fast lap in qualifying with a tyre problem, leaving him unable to set a time in the session.

The two Renault drivers, Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet were in sixth and seventh position respectively ahead of Sebastian Vettel for the Toro Rosso team in eighth.

In ninth place was the second Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who had a disastrous qualifying but finished ahead of Kubica, while David Coulthard qualified in eleventh in the second Red Bull for his final race at the British Grand Prix.

A disappointing qualifying for the Williams team after Nico Rosberg developed a suspension problem in Q1 and was unable to take any further part leaving him in eighteenth place on the grid, while team-mate Kazuki Nakajima starts from fifteenth.
